Chris Anderson had always been interested in the beauty industry but never had the chance to dive into it until he moved in with a roommate who attended the Aveda Institute in Twin Falls.

His roommate would often share stories about Aveda’s mission to care for the planet, and that resonated deeply with Chris. He decided to take a leap of faith and enroll in cosmetology school at Aveda, and it was one of the best decisions he ever made.

Reflecting on his time at Aveda, Chris believes that the institute provided him with a solid foundation and core values essential for running his own business.

He mentions that, while the beauty skills training was thorough, Aveda Institute – Twin Falls also prepared him to think independently. “They set you up with the essential tools and knowledge, but they remind you it’s an adult education,” Chris says.

“You’ve got to figure out what works for you, what you want, and how to put it all together yourself.”

Overcoming Challenges with Confidence

When Chris landed his first beauty job at Smart Styles, he faced a significant challenge. Transitioning from Aveda’s color line to Matrix’s color line was tough, especially with no prior experience.

But the training he received at Aveda gave him the confidence to overcome it.

He relied on the basics, like the color wheel, and referred back to his notes whenever he felt stuck. “Today, I still use that color wheel—it’s foundational for all hair color work!” he exclaims.

The Importance of Professionalism and Personability

One of the most valuable lessons Chris learned at Aveda was the importance of balancing professionalism with personability.

“In our industry, it’s crucial to connect with people. No one wants to sit in a chair and feel like they’re being served by a robot,” Chris explains.

Growing up in a family without a background in higher education or professional careers, Chris felt a strong need to establish a professional image. “I wanted to change that narrative and create a reputation that says, ‘Yes, he owns a business, but he’s also approachable and fun.'”

Giving Back to the Community Is Something Chris Finds Incredibly Rewarding

Chris has achieved numerous milestones since graduating from Aveda Institute – Twin Falls.

He started his own business from scratch and, despite initial challenges, is now booked out almost a month in advance. One of his proudest moments was hosting the first annual “Cuts in the Park” event, where he and his friend Valerie offered free kids’ haircuts before the school year started.

“Last year, we did 42 haircuts in one day, and we’re planning to make it even bigger this year,” Chris shares enthusiastically.

A Supportive Community

Even after graduation, the Aveda Institute community continues to support Chris. He frequently consults with his former instructors, Tina and Nicole, for guidance on new techniques and challenges.

“They’ve always got my back,” Chris says. This ongoing support has been instrumental in his career growth.

Adapting to Industry Changes

The beauty industry is always evolving, and Chris emphasizes the importance of staying updated with the latest techniques. “Nowadays, there’s a trend towards more ‘lived-in’ color and extending the time between appointments,” he notes.

Aveda’s curriculum was always up-to-date, preparing him for these changes. “We learned about balayage when it was still a new concept, and those skills are incredibly relevant today.”

For those considering a career in cosmetology, Chris can’t recommend Aveda Institute enough. “Choose a location that matches your interests, come in with an open mind, stay respectful, and take responsibility for your education.

“You’ll get out of it what you put in, so put your best foot forward,” he advises.
