Tips for Writing Your Beauty Resume
With the beauty industry growing with new trends and techniques, there are so many exciting career possibilities that could be opened up to you as a professional. We all know that the first step to getting there is through an education at beauty school, but how do you prepare for what comes after that?
Even when you’re doing something you love, it can feel overwhelming when you’re just entering the industry. That’s why we want to help by giving you some tips on an important part of your beauty career: writing a resume. Interviewing a job can be stressful but as long as you come prepared with a killer resume, it’ll likely go a lot smoother. Here’s how you can get ready to make a good impression on your beauty career interview right after graduation!
Stay Organized and Professional
We know that as beauty professionals, you want to show employers how creative you can be. While you can make your resume show that off in small ways, you should keep your resume looking neat and professional for the most part. After all, you are interviewing to create a professional relationship and first impressions can make a huge difference. You want to make sure that you come off as someone who can be relied on and there’s no better place to showcase that than in your resume.
Plus, you’re likely not the only person applying for that job. Chances are that the employer has multiple resumes to read and if yours isn’t clear and effectively shows what you’re capable of, it might not get as much attention as you deserve. Separate your resume into sections and include bullet points to make it as easy as possible. You might be surprised by how some simple adjustments can make a big difference!
Format it Correctly
Formatting is a huge part of making sure your resume is organized. You might associate a properly formatted resume with other industries but the beauty one is no different! As we said there are some ways you can personalize how your resume looks but here are some general formatting guidelines you should usually stick to:
- Write in a readable font.
- Keep your font size at 11 or 12.
- Set margins to no less than 0.5 inch.
- Be concise and keep it to one page.
- Use past and present tense correctly.
Include the Right Information
When writing your resume, make sure that you get right to the important points that employers want so they don’t have to search. Your beauty school education, any past experience working in the beauty industry and anything special about your education that could set you apart are all things that help the employer decide if you’re the right fit.
Don’t forget that you also just graduated from school where you made special connections with other beauty professionals. Why not have those relationships help you in your career? If you ask, one of your instructors would probably love to write you a recommendation letter that you could include in your resume. One or two of those can help you stand out even more from other applicants!
Talk About Your Career Goals
Don’t be afraid to include a section where you talk more about yourself and what you most want in a future career. Employers want to know if you’re going to be a good match for the job in both a professional and personal aspect. This benefits you too because you want to be certain that you work at a place that supports your career goals and is able to help you get there. Just make sure that you write this section after the important information we listed above and that you’re still staying professional and organized!
Proofread, Proofread, Proofread
We all make small mistakes and that’s why it’s so important to check for typos or missing information before your interview. The last thing you want to do is to realize something is wrong with your resume when it’s too late to change it! Not only should you reread your resume but you should also ask a friend or family member to check it too. They may be able to catch something you weren’t able to after looking at for so long. The more eyes you have on your resume, the better!
